Leadership is about empowering, improving, transforming and working together. At ACG School Jakarta, we believe leadership experiences should be available to students of all ages and year levels, so even our youngest learners are offered opportunities to develop these valuable skills and abilities.
While our Middle School students have the chance to understand and build leadership qualities in the classroom, our Middle School Student Council provides further responsibilities and activities for budding leaders.
Under the guidance and mentorship of Student Council Coordinator Annie Pickering, students learn to find their voice and represent their peers. In a recent interview, council member Devansh Bahuguna (Year 9) shares his thoughts on being part of the leadership team for the 2021 - 2022 academic year.
How did you feel when your name was announced as a Student Council member?
I was ecstatic, but I remained calm and just punched the air with joy. However, after we left the meeting, I flew out of my chair to tell my parents. Unfortunately, I did not qualify for the Stuco [Student Council] last year, which was really disappointing, so the feeling of redemption when I was selected meant a lot.
What qualities make a good leader?
I think that understanding the problems of various individuals is an essential skill to have, as you can help them as per your decisions. A good leader should be able to get the job done by building consensus.
Why do you feel it's so important for students to be involved in the leadership team?
It is important because students should have an opportunity to represent their classes as it prepares us for real-life situations by developing our leadership skills.
What do you consider to be your main responsibilities as a student leader?
Helping others and helping them well. I also think our main responsibilities include motivating others to participate in events and the ability to get the task done with the team.
Are there any specific skills you would like to develop as a student leader?
My goal is to join every leadership team possible and gain more experience and expertise by working with different groups doing different tasks.
What are your favourite subjects, and why?
My favourite subject is maths because the maths teachers are amazing. Plus, maths is really fun because I like solving problems– and I get good marks in it!
What advice do you have for students wanting to become future leaders?
Do not be afraid to ask questions; there is no such thing as a bad question. Keep your confidence high!
